Another year has almost come to an end and it’s been a big one for Behaviour Change! 2024 saw us launch our newsletter and our new initiative Inclusive Approaches, we welcomed Anaïs as a Behavioural Intervention Designer (BID), and Honica and Tasha got promoted to Senior BIDs. This year, we ran 26 projects and hosted 25% more workshops than last year!
Like most companies, we have a team group chat (ours is called BCHQ). We’ve been looking back at our shared photos across 2024 and we think they paint a pretty good picture of how the year has gone.
So here’s a round-up of our year.. in Whatsapp photos.
Five photos of obstructing Christmas trees
Inspired by our work with RNIB on reducing obstructing hire bikes, we noticed a similar behaviour when it came to Christmas tree disposal in January. The team snapped and shared 5 photos of badly disposed trees they spotted, which also inspired our first blog of the year.
Four photos of packaged fresh produce
Whilst working with WRAP on research to encourage more purchases of loose fruit and veg, we trialled some in-store messaging to encourage shoppers in Waitrose to choose loose. Whilst doing this work, we couldn’t help sharing ‘outrageous’ examples of plastic packaging we spotted in stores.
Seven photos of objects with faces on them
For Recycle Week this year, we were involved in developing the theme ‘Rescue Me’, all about bringing recyclable items to life with faces and personalities in a bid to get people to rescue them from the bin. A key aspect of developing these characters was their cuteness, and with the rise in popularity of Jellycat (and copycats) we couldn’t help sharing photos of other adorable objects with cute faces on them we’d seen for inspo.
Five photos of the development of the 'Rescue Me' game
For Recycle Week, we also led the design and creation of ‘Workshop in a Box’ - an intervention aimed at encouraging primary school children to speak up at home about recyclable items that wrongly end up in the bin. The star of Workshop in a Box is the ‘Rescue Me game’ and in developing the game, we tested early versions of it at various points, sharing photos as we went. We tested it with David’s daughter and her friends, played a few games in the office, and Honica even took it home to play a game with her fiancé. If you want in on the fun, there’s a printable version of the game you can download here.
Thirteen photos of toilet flushes
This year, we’ve been working with Northumbrian Water Group on reducing water waste by encouraging the correct use of dual-flushes (these are flushes that have a full flush and half flush option). Throughout the year, the team have sent 13 pictures of toilet flushes and intervention messaging we’ve spotted in the wild or online. We’ll be testing this intervention in the new year, look out for our results in future newsletters!
Fourteen photos 'out and about'
When team members get to travel for work, we’ll often share photos to keep everyone up to date (and to make everyone else jealous). For our work on changing landlord behaviour, Tasha headed up to Leeds to see our messaging out in the wild. She shared lots of photos of her trip, but was particularly excited when she managed to capture not one, but two buses in one photo.
For our ongoing work with the Chewing Gum Task Force, Tasha and Polly headed to Keep Britain Tidy’s conference in York to tell local authorities all about how to get involved. So that we could properly show off our signage, Polly dragged a lamp post all the way from Peterborough to York - on the train!
Four photos of our own interventions
Of course, when we spot our own interventions in the wild, we have to take a photo. The best one this year actually happened last week at our Christmas party in Hackney, where we saw one of our gum litter signs from over a year ago still going strong in Broadway Market (so of course we needed a group photo with it).
Seven photos of monthly drinks
Monthly drinks throughout the year often go ahead even if the whole team can’t make it. Sometimes they’re rather depleted, like when it was just Polly and Honica in July so they shared a bottle of wine in the office together. Or for Anaïs’ first team drinks in October, only Polly and Honica were available to take her out (there seems to be a theme here). But sometimes we try to make it work, like when we got Tasha to join us virtually in November.
So that’s a wrap for another busy and rewarding 12 months at BC! We’ve already got some exciting new projects lined up for next year which we can’t wait to share. Thanks to all of our brilliant clients and partners for helping us have another successful year, we can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store for us (both in new projects, and of course, more WhatsApp pics to share).
